Air India's Transformation: A Responsibility for Tata, Not Just a Business (2025)

A Tale of Responsibility: Air India's Transformation

In a recent address, N Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons, shared his perspective on the acquisition of Air India, a move that has sparked curiosity and debate.

Chandrasekaran emphasized that Air India is not merely a business venture for the Tata Group, but a responsibility. He highlighted the continuous challenges faced by the aviation sector, particularly the unpredictable nature of global supply chains, which impact the availability of parts, infrastructure, and new aircraft.

"When the Tata Group decided to acquire Air India, many questioned the decision. With the Group performing well, why enter a sector riddled with challenges?" Chandrasekaran posed this question to the audience, gathering at an event to celebrate the birth anniversary of JRD Tata, the founder of the Tata Group.

"For the Tata Group, Air India is more than just an opportunity; it's a duty," he asserted.

The Tata Group acquired Air India and Air India Express in 2022, embarking on an ambitious five-year transformation plan. However, progress has been slower than anticipated due to various factors, including global supply chain issues.

Chandrasekaran explained the potential for growth in the aviation sector, stating, "Every percentage point of GDP growth translates to a 2% growth in the domestic aviation sector. If India's growth reaches 8%, the aviation industry will grow by 16%. This trend will continue for at least the next three decades, marking an exciting phase of economic growth, especially for the aviation sector."

But he cautioned, "It's not without its challenges. The aviation sector faces continuous hurdles."

He elaborated on the unpredictability of the global supply chain, stating, "Every plan we make becomes difficult due to the challenges we face in this area."

Chandrasekaran also highlighted the capital-intensive nature of the aviation business and the industry's thin margins.

With India's economy poised to become the third largest, Chandrasekaran expressed optimism about the country's growth trajectory. He noted the impressive 8.2% GDP growth in the July-September quarter and predicted a minimum of 7% growth for the current fiscal year.

He attributed this growth to increasing consumer confidence, consumption-led growth, and public infrastructure spending.

"India will become a USD 5 trillion economy, and we will surpass that. We will achieve this faster, and the pace at which we add each additional trillion dollars will be shorter. This will create exciting opportunities, but connectivity is key to making this happen," he said.

Chandrasekaran acknowledged the various aspects of the aviation industry that need management, some predictable and some unexpected, like geopolitical surprises that can suddenly change flight routes.

"The demand for air travel is high, and the aspirations of Indians are growing. Everyone wants to be connected and travel. Our commitment is to build a world-class airline," he stated.

He shared the airline's plans to retrofit its domestic fleet by the end of the year and its wide-body fleet over the next two years. He acknowledged delays due to supply chain issues but expressed confidence in acquiring new planes monthly over the next three years, modernizing almost 95% to 99% of the fleet.

"It will take time, but we are committed to this transformation," Chandrasekaran concluded.
