Imagine the joy and astonishment of a family who, nearly four years after their beloved dog went missing, received the miraculous news they had long hoped for. Depha Miedecke was in the midst of her Christmas Eve preparations, wrapping gifts and listening to festive tunes, when an unexpected discovery transformed her holiday experience. She came across a blurry photograph of a black and brown dog, which had been living on its own for months near the quaint town of Murdunna, located in southeastern Tasmania.
Instantly, Ms. Miedecke thought the dog bore a striking resemblance to Lucy, her own pet who had disappeared from their West Hobart yard back in March 2022. Without hesitation, she reached out to Lisa Green, an independent pet rescuer who had shared the image after being contacted by concerned residents trying to capture the wandering canine.
Remarkably, just two days later, the dog was caught, and as Ms. Miedecke and her family anxiously awaited confirmation, a microchip scan revealed the astonishing truth: it was indeed Lucy. "It was absolutely incredible — we all burst into tears," Ms. Miedecke recalled emotionally. "I’m not particularly religious, but it felt like a true Christmas miracle."
Lucy, a mix of kelpie and blue heeler, had been part of Ms. Miedecke's family since she was a puppy in 2018. When Lucy first vanished, the family feared she might have been stolen, especially since there had been reports of a strange man lingering in their neighborhood at the time. "We put up posters throughout Hobart, registered her as a lost pet, contacted local councils, the RSPCA, and did everything one would normally do in such situations," said Ms. Miedecke. "Honestly, I would have preferred if someone had stolen all our belongings rather than taking our dog."
The emotional toll was heavy; Ms. Miedecke often stayed awake late at night, consumed with worry about Lucy’s fate, but no leads ever emerged. "I always held onto hope and had a feeling we might find her someday, but actually having it happen has been nothing short of remarkable," she expressed.
Starting around April 2025, locals in the vicinity of Murdunna began spotting what appeared to be a wild dog roaming through the bushland. Lucy was seen resting near the Arthur Highway and was frequently sighted between Murdunna and Dunalley, another small town nearby. Although some residents attempted to help by offering shelter in their sheds and leaving food out for her, Lucy would flee at the slightest approach.
Concerned about her safety and potential accidents on the busy road, residents hired Ms. Green in late December to catch the dog. On Christmas Eve, she set up a humane trap stocked with enticing treats, including roast chicken and stuffing, alongside fresh water and a comfortable bed.
On Christmas Day, the trap successfully captured Lucy, and Ms. Miedecke along with her daughter, Freya Hansen, arrived to bring her home the following day. "When we saw her, she was trembling with fear — utterly terrified," Freya recounted.
After confirming Lucy's identity through her microchip, the family took her to the veterinarian for a thorough examination. Ms. Miedecke noted that Lucy had lost approximately 13 to 14 kilograms since her disappearance in 2022 and looked significantly different. "She was infested with ticks and fleas, but overall physically, she was fine and had her blood work done as well," Ms. Miedecke explained.
Finally, after more than 1,300 days away, Lucy spent her first night back at home, and the family is now helping her readjust to life as a loved pet once again. Freya acknowledged that the path to recovery might be lengthy. "She's definitely shaken up, having been alone in the wilderness for such a long time. But we really believe she remembers who we are and that she’s finally safe at home."
The family expressed profound gratitude towards the Murdunna community for their kindness in looking after Lucy throughout her ordeal. "We are so thankful to everyone who cared for her, fed her, and did their best to ensure her safety while she was out there," Freya said gratefully. "We are just overjoyed to have her back home."
