In a stunning display of skill, Colby Covington triumphed over Luke Rockhold in the main event of RAF 5 held in Florida, finishing the match in less than two rounds.
The former All-American wrestler from Oregon State showcased his exceptional grappling abilities by consistently reversing Rockhold's position, effectively maneuvering him around the mat, and quickly accumulating points. Despite Rockhold's commendable efforts to remain competitive, Covington’s relentless attack was overwhelming. He sealed his victory with a decisive four-point move, bringing the score to 12-0 and securing a technical fall.
After the match, Covington took a moment to acknowledge Rockhold’s courage in accepting the challenge, stating, "It felt amazing. He felt very strong. He was a big guy. I have a lot of respect for that guy. He was a very worthy opponent, and I’m honored to share the mat with Luke Rockhold."
Covington wasted no time scoring, quickly adding two points to his tally as he attempted to pin Rockhold, though he didn't achieve the finish. Nevertheless, he soon increased his lead to 4-0.
During the match, Covington executed a clever ankle pick, but Rockhold's defense held firm, prompting the referee to call a stalemate and reset them back to their feet. Moments later, Covington again managed to secure a takedown, successfully earning two additional points just before the first period concluded.
When they resumed, Rockhold attempted his first offensive move, but Covington was quick to counter with a reversal, gaining another two points. The match culminated with Covington seizing a front headlock, throwing Rockhold to the ground, and rolling for a final four points, concluding the contest with a dominant score of 12-0.
While Covington's victory was anticipated due to his wrestling pedigree, he did not overlook Rockhold’s determination and adaptability throughout the bout.
Following this impressive win in his RAF debut, Covington set his sights on a significant challenge: calling out UFC Hall of Famer Georges St-Pierre (GSP), who holds the record for the most takedowns in UFC welterweight history, next in line for a potential matchup.
"You know who I want next? There’s only one person above me on the takedown list in UFC welterweight history and that’s Georges St-Pierre," Covington declared passionately. "GSP, get out here in Real American Freestyle and let’s make it happen.
"I’ll talk to my people, and they’ll reach out to your people so we can make this a reality. Everyone wants to see you back, GSP."
It's hard to dispute Covington’s reasoning given St-Pierre's legendary status and notable achievements in the sport. Now, the real question remains: will the RAF organization succeed in persuading St-Pierre to come out of retirement for a match against Covington?
