The New York Giants are on the hunt for a new head coach, and the search is heating up! One of the top contenders is Klint Kubiak, the offensive coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks, who recently had a virtual interview with the Giants. But what makes Kubiak such a sought-after candidate? Let's dive in.
Kubiak's connection to the Giants runs deeper than you might think. He was born just weeks after the Giants defeated his father, Gary Kubiak, in Super Bowl 21. Talk about a full-circle moment!
Fast forward almost 39 years, and Klint is now a top coaching prospect. The Giants interviewed him virtually on Saturday, according to reports. This comes after a stellar season where Kubiak orchestrated the Seahawks' offense, which ranked as the third-highest scoring in the NFL. Impressive, right?
His father, Gary Kubiak, also had a notable career. He was the backup quarterback for John Elway on the 1986 Broncos, who lost to the Giants in that Super Bowl. Gary later became a successful head coach himself, leading the Broncos (with Peyton Manning at quarterback) to a Super Bowl victory in Super Bowl 50. Talk about a coaching legacy!
Klint Kubiak's coaching journey includes stints under his father in Denver and Minnesota. He's also part of the esteemed Shanahan coaching tree, known for its emphasis on the running game. His resume includes roles as the Vikings' offensive coordinator in 2021, the Broncos' quarterbacks coach in 2022, the 49ers' passing game coordinator in 2023, and the Saints' offensive coordinator in 2024. The Seahawks' offense, under Kubiak, utilized a strong running game with players like Kenneth Walker III and Zach Charbonnet, complementing quarterback Sam Darnold.
The Giants are hoping to replicate this success with their own promising backfield duo, Cam Skattebo and Tyrone Tracy Jr.
In addition to Kubiak, the Giants also interviewed Darren Rizzi, the Broncos' special teams coordinator, on Saturday. Under NFL rules, only coaches from teams with first-round byes, like the Broncos and Seahawks, were available for virtual interviews this week.
Interestingly, the Giants also interviewed Broncos defensive coordinator Vance Joseph.
Kubiak's offensive approach is seen as a way to prioritize the development of a quarterback like Jaxson Dart, which is crucial for the Giants' future. In-person interviews with coaches under contract can't begin until January 19th. The Giants are expected to interview leading candidate John Harbaugh, who was recently fired by the Ravens, this week.
