"It manifested as feeling very anxious, panicky, being very triggered by smells and noises in hospitals," Hope explains. This is a common experience, as John Hawker, a psychotherapist, points out. He believes hospital phobias often begin in childhood and are triggered by sensory memories.

And this is the part most people miss... Our brains can associate certain smells or sounds with past trauma, creating an intense fear response. For Hope, it was the smell of surgical spirit that triggered her phobia.

"A bit of their brain was triggered by the smell of surgical spirit, and it doesn't matter how much logic that you tried to use to overcome that; they still don't want to walk into the hospital," Hawker says.

Hope's first few shifts as a midwife student were terrifying. She had to face her fears head-on, but over time, she found comfort and purpose in helping others. Talking therapy played a crucial role in her journey, helping her detach from negative associations and develop self-compassion.

"One of the tools I was given was the idea of the compassionate self - treating yourself in the same way you would a friend if they said to you 'I'm terrified to go into a hospital'," Hope shares.

So, how can we cope with our fears? Hope and Kim Black, another hospital phobia survivor, offer some practical tips:

  • Write down your fears: Putting your fears on paper can give you perspective and help you process them.
  • Take someone with you: A trusted companion can provide support and help you relax.
  • Tell hospital staff: Communicating your fears to staff ensures they can provide the best care and support.
  • Tell your GP: Your GP can refer you to experts in behavioral therapy, such as psychologists.
  • Talking therapy: Self-refer to NHS talking therapy services for professional support.

Kim's story is a powerful example of how hospital phobias can develop and the impact they can have. She developed paediatric medical traumatic stress after multiple surgeries at a young age.

"I would do anything not to go to the hospital, anything, I would just completely disassociate or avoid it altogether," Kim shares. But now, she helps others overcome their hospital phobias and build confidence after major surgery.

The key to overcoming hospital phobia lies in facing our fears gradually and seeking support. Hope's journey is a testament to the power of self-compassion and professional help. By putting herself in the environment that frightened her for short periods, she gradually acclimatized to hospitals.

"Now I'm a midwife, and there are moments when I just want to run out of there, but I've turned a very negative experience as a child into a very positive way to help people as an adult," Hope says.
