IKEA's SMAKFEST: A Sensory Food & Art Extravaganza in Stockholm | Ingka Group (2026)

Imagine this: For the first time ever, an IKEA store morphs into an immersive art experience! That's exactly what happened at SMAKFEST in Stockholm, a 'taste feast' that celebrated food, culture, and imagination in a way that’s never been done before in the company's 80-year history.

Inside, guests were treated to over 30 sensory moments, a dazzling fusion of Swedish tradition and global influences, mirroring the vibrant tapestry of modern Swedish society. The experience began with a warm welcome from pantomimes and a full gospel choir serenading visitors from the top of the escalators. A giant FRAKTA bar, ingeniously crafted in the shape of the iconic IKEA blue bag, served as the evening's initial refreshment. Throughout the store, unexpected installations and room sets surprised and delighted, including a human kaleidoscope, dining in complete darkness, and spoon-fed tastings delivered through a tiny peep hole.

Live music performances were seamlessly woven into the installations, creating an electrifying atmosphere. The evening’s musical stars included Cherrie, the globally recognized Stockholm-based R&B artist, alongside Diaspora, a creative collective known for uniting local and international talent through music, as well as Mike Näselius, Hatami Siamak, Chez Ali, Diana Emerita, and DJ Majk.

But here's where it gets controversial... The highlight of the night? An entire floor dedicated to celebrating the 40th birthday of the iconic IKEA meatball! The milestone was marked with a meatball birthday cake, gravy fountains, and a diverse showcase of meatballs from around the world, spanning Eastern Europe, Latin America, Oceania, and South Asia. True to the IKEA food experience, plant balls, veggie balls, fish balls, and chicken balls were also part of the menu.

SMAKFEST was a groundbreaking blend of a feast and an art installation, exploring a new kind of IKEA experience that truly embodies the brand's innate curiosity.

And this is just the beginning...
