In September 2022, Casey's life took an unexpected turn when she was diagnosed with an acoustic neuroma, a benign skull base tumor. But here's where it gets controversial... despite being non-cancerous, these tumors can have a profound impact on one's quality of life, especially when it comes to hearing and balance.
Casey, a resident near Houston, knew she needed the best care possible. She chose MD Anderson, renowned for its expertise in treating such complex conditions. With a friend undergoing treatment and a husband's friend working as a nurse practitioner there, Casey felt guided to the right place.
"I decided to come to MD Anderson because you guys are the best," Casey shared. And her experience lived up to that expectation.
At her first appointment, Casey met Dr. Marc-Elie Nader, a head and neck surgeon and neurotologist. He explained her options clearly, taking away the fear that often accompanies a diagnosis. Initially, Casey opted for active surveillance, allowing her doctors to monitor the tumor's growth.
But as her hearing loss worsened, Casey faced a pivotal decision. MD Anderson offered a groundbreaking surgical approach: removing the tumor and simultaneously placing a cochlear implant to restore hearing. It was a chance to reclaim her hearing, and Casey took it.
"My doctors told me that my hearing was not going to get any better. And after learning that this surgery was an option with the cochlear implant, it felt like the right time to get the tumor removed," she recalled.
The surgery, performed by Dr. Nader and neurosurgeon Dr. Shaan Raza, was a success. Casey woke up with no major issues and was soon texting and emailing. She stayed in the hospital for three days, undergoing physical and vestibular therapy to aid her recovery.
"Dr. Nader and Dr. Raza checked on me to ensure I was doing well. The nursing staff was incredible, ensuring I was comfortable and even helping me shower before I left," Casey said.
At home, Casey continued her recovery, following her care team's advice. About a month later, her cochlear implant was activated, and the results were life-changing.
"When I first heard the beeps, I cried tears of joy. It was incredible. I felt so blessed," she shared.
Now, almost two years later, Casey is grateful for her decision. She continues to maintain her hearing and recommends the cochlear implant to others with similar conditions. "It's not some magical fix, but with dedication and the right care, it can work wonders," she advises.
Casey's experience at MD Anderson left a lasting impression. "Everybody at MD Anderson is phenomenal. The staff's warmth and professionalism set it apart from other hospitals," she said.
And she holds a special place in her heart for the Head and Neck Center team. "They're all so kind. Dr. Nader always greeted me with a smile, no matter the challenges he might have faced that day."
