Imagine the joy and anticipation! On December 14, 2025, at a special Christmas devotional for Latter-day Saints and friends in Portland, Maine, a momentous announcement was made. Elder Allen D. Haynie, the United States Northeast Area President, shared exciting news from the First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints: a temple would be built in Portland, Maine!
This is a huge deal because, as the First Presidency stated, it's a reason to celebrate and give thanks for a significant blessing. Having a temple means more frequent access to sacred ordinances, covenants, and the spiritual power found only in the Lord's house.
This announcement pushes the total number of temples worldwide – whether they're operating, being built, or just announced – to an impressive 383. And get this: it will be the first temple in Maine!
But here's where it gets interesting. Elder Haynie also revealed that the First Presidency had decided to change how temple announcements are made. Now, when the First Presidency directs it, the news of a new temple will be shared on-site by a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles or a member of an Area Presidency. This Portland announcement was the first time an Area Presidency member made such an announcement.
President Dallin H. Oaks hinted at this change during the October 2025 general conference. He explained that with so many temples in the early stages of planning and construction, they would adjust the timing of announcing new temples. The focus would shift to providing temple ordinances to members worldwide, including determining when and where to announce new construction.
Elder Haynie clarified that this didn't mean there would be no more temple announcements. Instead, the timing and location of future announcements would be decided later. He encouraged everyone present to prepare themselves to enter a house of the Lord.
