Strava's Most Popular Cycling Road: Alto de Patios, Colombia (2025)

Discover the world's most trending cycling route in 2025—a location that might surprise many enthusiasts. But here's where it gets controversial: most assume top cycling routes are nestled in iconic European mountains or renowned city circuits, yet the most popular segment this year is in Colombia, specifically on the outskirts of Bogotá.

According to Strava’s latest annual report, the segment garnering the highest activity in 2025 isn’t in the Alps, Pyrenees, Mallorca, or bicycle-centric cities like Copenhagen or Amsterdam. Instead, it’s a climb called Alto de Patios, a scenic route just outside the Colombian capital, which has captured the global cycling community’s attention.

Strava, the world’s leading exercise app, revealed that the most frequently ridden segment is named ‘Mi Segmento: de la redomita a Patios,’ stretching approximately 5.5 kilometers from Bogotá to the nearby town of La Calera, known locally as the Patios climb. The route has seen over 34,000 individual riders within just the first 11 months of 2025—that’s an average of about 102 new cyclists joining daily!

A record on this climb was set by elite Guatemalan cyclist Julio Ispache, who completed it in a remarkable 13 minutes and 37 seconds last October, maintaining an average speed of roughly 22.8 km/h. Notably, Colombia’s first and only Tour de France winner, Egan Bernal, nearly secured the top spot earlier this year, falling short of the fastest time on an official, longer segment called ‘Belisario-Patios’ by just one second.

Moving beyond South America, the second most popular segment is found in São Paulo, Brazil. This 1.49 km riverside stretch, called ‘Hebraica-Rebouças x Cidade Jardim,’ attracted over 26,000 cyclists in 2025, proving that urban rides combined with scenic views continue to draw big crowds.

The third spot goes to London, quite interestingly in the Wandsworth area, on a segment simply called ‘Bridge Sprint.’ Although Strava couldn't locate this segment explicitly on their platform, Wandsworth Bridge is a busy route into central London and was upgraded two years ago with a dedicated cycle lane—reflecting how urban infrastructure improvements can influence cycling habits.

Since launching in 2009, Strava's platform now boasts 180 million global users. Their Year in Sport report covers activity data from September 1, 2024, through August 30, 2025. While most insights focus on running, which remains the platform’s top activity, several fascinating cycling statistics emerge.

For instance, among road bike brands, Trek leads the pack, followed by Specialized and Giant. Interestingly, for gravel and mountain biking categories, Specialized takes the top spot, swapping positions with Trek. Additionally, Scott is a prominent brand for gravel bikes, and Giant remains a favorite for mountain biking enthusiasts.

To wrap up, Strava subscribers can expect personalized Year in Sport summaries starting December 8. But could these popular segments indicate a shift toward adventure and scenic rides, or are we witnessing a rise in urban cycling culture? And more provocatively, does the popularity of routes outside the traditional European mountain ranges suggest that the classic “big climb” is being replaced by local, community-driven adventures?
