The Myth of the Steelers' Coach Handling: Fact vs. Fiction (2026)

The notion that the Pittsburgh Steelers never fire their head coaches has become almost legendary — but this idea doesn’t fully hold up under scrutiny. Many people believe that Mike Tomlin is safe because the Steelers have a tradition of loyalty to their coaches. But here's where it gets controversial: that belief has inflated into a sort of myth.

Some enthusiasts even claim that the Steelers have not fired a head coach since 1941. For example, ESPN’s Adam Schefter recently stated, “the organization hasn’t fired a head coach since 1941.” But digging into the facts reveals a more complex story.

Between 1941 and the arrival of Chuck Noll in 1969, the Steelers went through nine head coaches, and several were indeed let go. Bill Austin, who coached before Noll, was dismissed after the 1968 season. Mike Nixon, Austin’s predecessor, faced the same fate when he was fired after 1965. Walt Kiesling, infamous for turning down local legend Johnny Unitas, was relieved of his duties after 1956. John Michelosen lasted four years but was also fired after the 1951 season. Then there’s Jim Leonard, who coached in 1945 and chose to resign publicly before the team could fire him.

So, from 1945 to 1968, there were at least four coach firings and one preemptive resignation. That timeline paints a much different picture than the popular narrative.

When Chuck Noll came on board, he brought remarkable stability, staying for 23 years until he "retired" at 59. While it’s unclear what would have happened if he insisted on coaching longer, it’s likely that an involuntary departure was on the horizon.

It's true the Steelers have enjoyed an impressive stretch of coaching stability for over half a century, but acting like this means the organization would never fire a coach is misleading. Prior to Noll, the Steelers had one of the most volatile coaching situations in the league.

If Art Rooney II clings stubbornly to the idea that coaches should never be fired just to preserve this legendary status, even when change is necessary for the team's future and for Mike Tomlin's career trajectory, that could be just as harmful as teams that fire coaches constantly. So, is the Steelers’ reputation for steadfast coaching loyalty a strength or a potential blind spot? What do you think — does tradition sometimes get in the way of progress?
