A bold statement from Minister Nyesom Wike has sparked intrigue and controversy in the political arena. In a recent address, Wike assured President Bola Ahmed Tinubu that he could "sleep with his two eyes closed" regarding the 2027 presidential election results in Rivers State. But here's where it gets interesting: Wike's confidence stems from the unwavering support of his followers, whom he refers to as the "foot soldiers of the Renewed Hope Family."
During his "thank you" visit to Port Harcourt City, Wike reminded supporters of the All Progressives Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party of their pivotal role in Tinubu's election victory in 2023. He emphasized that the benefits of their struggle were now being reaped, and no one could claim the glory at the last minute.
"In 2023, we led the charge. We were with the Renewed Hope Agenda from the start, and that's when we decided to back Tinubu. Now, those who weren't there initially, who went and supported Atiku Abubakar and couldn't even muster 10% of the votes, are suddenly claiming they want to lead the Renewed Hope Agenda. Is that fair?" Wike questioned.
He continued, "You weren't there from the beginning. You didn't go out to buy the pepper, the salt, or the oil. You didn't participate in any of these efforts. And now, when the meal is ready, you want to be the first to dig in. That's not how it works. No one in this state can push us out."
Wike urged his supporters to remain united and focused on Tinubu's reelection, despite the activities of detractors. He explained that the visit was an opportunity to express gratitude for the support in 2023 and to advise his followers to continue working together, promising an even better 2026.
Sir Allwell Ihunda, Mayor of Port Harcourt, praised Tinubu for ensuring democratically elected council chairmen in the state and acknowledged Wike's eight-year governorship, which brought numerous life-enhancing projects to the people.
Mrs. Blessing Amadi, representing Port Harcourt II Federal Constituency, commended Wike for empowering women by making them vice chairmen in all the LGAs of the state, a unique recognition for women in the country.
Mr. Smart Adoki, representing Port Harcourt II in the State Assembly, thanked Wike for taking the risk to support Tinubu in 2023, adding that the people of Rivers were now reaping the benefits. Adoki pledged his continued allegiance to Wike, believing he has more to offer the people.
And this is the part most people miss: the underlying message of unity and gratitude. Wike's assurance to Tinubu is a testament to the power of collective effort and the importance of recognizing those who have been there from the beginning.
So, what do you think? Is Wike's confidence justified? Should those who joined the struggle later have an equal say in leading the Renewed Hope Agenda? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
